ROI ART PRIZE

As an annual, acquisitive art prize of $10,000 funded and run by the Roi Apartments community of North Fitzroy, the Roi Art Prize is an unusual project. Now in its seventh year it continues to gain respect and interest, attracting more than 50 entries from established and emerging artists. From the first year’s winner in 2012, the late Gordon Bennett, there has been an impressive list of entrants and winners.

The 2018 Roi Art Prize was awarded at a presentation at the Roi Apartments on 22 November to a photographic work by Ponch Hawkes. It now joins earlier winning works on permanent display in the Roi buildings. The People’s Choice award, voted by the Roi community, went to a painting by Karen Standke.

The prize is open to recent works in any two-dimensional medium by artists who live, work or exhibit in Yarra, Moreland or Darebin municipalities. The Roi Art Space Committee commends and thanks artists and galleries for their enthusiastic support of the Prize since 2012; and the 2018 judging panel of David Coles, Lindy Joubert, and Prof. Anne Marsh.
