The idea of the ROI Art Prize was initiated to enhance the experience of living in and visiting the ROI apartments for the owners, residents and guests. It was also for the ROI community to engage with local artists and the creative community.

The annual ROI Art Prize is incorporated within the ROI Owners Corporation Rules and managed by the ROI Art Prize Committee.

The annual prize of $10,000 (funded by the ROI apartment owners) is now a recognised and valued prize. Artworks in the media of painting, limited edition printmaking, photography and drawing, and created within two years of the closing date, are eligible. Up until 2016 the ROI Art Prize was open to artists living in, or with studios or galleries within the City of Yarra. In 2017 this will be extended to include adjoining municipalities.

The ROI Art Prize attracts established as well as emerging contemporary artists. There is an impressive list of winners who have exhibited in curated exhibitions, been the recipients of artists’ residencies and prizes and are represented in private and public state and national collections.

Each year a distinguished professional artist, lecturer, critic or curator is invited to judge the entries and select the winning artwork. Judges have included Tom Shield, David Coles, Lindy Joubert, Dan Rule and Dr Catherine Bell.

In 2016 Runner-up and People’s Choice prizes were awarded.

The winners were:

1st prize: Monique Morter

2nd prize: Erica Wrigley

People’s Choice: Melanie Capel

The winners are announced at the celebration event in the foyer of the ROI complex, to which all the artists, apartment owners, residents and supporters are invited.

The winning work is displayed in the foyer for the first year. The 2016 winner, Monique Morter, has lent us an artwork to hang in the foyer as her winning work was stolen. The 2016 People’s Choice award is displayed near the lift on Level 3 in the East Wing.

The ROI Art Space Committee commends and thanks previous artists and galleries for their enthusiastic participation in and support of the Prize.

2017 Conditions of Entry are available NOW!
